As a live wedding illustrator, I’ve had a front-row seat to so many stunning weddings, and trust me, the venue sets the tone for everything. It shapes the flow of your day, frames your guest experience, and becomes the literal backdrop for every single memory. From first looks to champagne toasts to that wild dance floor energy. And I’ve learned that the right venue doesn’t just hold your wedding. It elevates it. Here are six things to look for when you want your venue to be more than just four walls and a pretty view.

1. Spaces That Let the Party Breathe

One of the smartest things you can look for? A venue with room to lounge, gather, and explore. I once sketched at a wedding where the couple chose the venue specifically because it offered multiple lounge and bar areas, so guests could mingle between dance breaks. You can also design each of these lounges to be completely unique! For example, one lounge can be moody and masculine, filled with dark velvet and leather accents. The other can be bright, floral, and colorful. This can allow for each lounge to reflect each of the partners.

A bonus is that venues with multiple spaces give you flexibility. Cocktail hour here, dinner there, dancing under the stars. And for wedding weekends? Look for venues that offer full buyouts. For example, boutique hotels or estates where your guests can stay on-site and settle in. It changes the energy completely when no one has to Uber anywhere.

2. Indoor + Outdoor Options Are a Must!

Weather is unpredictable, but your timeline shouldn’t be. Venues with both indoor and outdoor spaces keep the day flowing smoothly no matter what. Maybe you dreamed of a garden ceremony, but need a backup space just in case. Or maybe you want cocktails on the lawn, dinner under a tent, and dancing in a ballroom. The more versatile the venue, the more layered (and photographable!) your day becomes.

Permanent tents are a big plus, too. They give you that elegant outdoor feel without the logistics and price tag of building one from scratch.

3. On-Site Getting Ready Suites

Trust me when I say: getting ready on-site makes a world of difference. The energy is more relaxed, no one’s stressing over traffic, and the whole morning feels cohesive. If your venue has a bridal suite or cottage, that’s a huge win. If not, consider renting a nearby Airbnb or hotel suite big enough to host your crew comfortably. 

4. Guest Experience Details (Yes, They Matter!)

Let’s talk about the often-overlooked things that make a venue truly elevated:

• Valet or ample parking. No one wants to circle the block 10 times or hike in heels.

• Heating and cooling. Outdoor tent? Make sure it’s climate-controlled. 

• Accessibility. Grand staircases are beautiful, but consider elderly guests or parents with strollers.

5. In-House Planning Support 

Some venues offer a coordinator, someone who ensures things run on time. But others (like The Cescaphe Group in Philadelphia) go a step further with full planning teams built into the experience. Their venues range from historic ballrooms, like The Bellevue, to modern industrial spaces, like The Switch House with its towering iron windows and city views. That variety and support can be a game-changer when you want an all-inclusive feel without sacrificing personality.

6. Flexibility With Vendors

Here’s the thing: you want to choose your vendors. Your photographer, your caterer, and yes, your illustrator! But some venues have strict vendor lists, or won’t allow things like live painting, late-night snacks, or specialty rentals. Museums and historical venues, for example, often have tight restrictions on where artists can set up or how late music can play.

If you’re dreaming of a midnight dance party or want me sketching guests during cocktail hour, double-check those rules before signing. No one wants to find out the party ends at 9 p.m. because of a county curfew.

I was contacted by a couple in Scottsdale, Arizona, who wanted a live wedding illustrator for their October wedding at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa. I was so excited to work with them, but wasn’t sure I’d be able to. A close friend was planning her wedding for the same weekend. However, my friend’s wedding ended up being the day after my client’s, and I was able to make it to both! 

An Unforgettable Event at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa 

I am always so honored when a couple loves my illustrations enough to fly me to their event! This couple was so sweet, and I was happy to be a highlight of their special day. They hosted their wedding at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa, and it was absolutely breathtaking. Plus, the couple included so many fun details! Instead of a traditional guestbook, they opted for an audio guest book in - get this - a custom phone booth! The ceremony took place on the lawn of one of the Omni Scottsdale Suites, which was then flipped into the reception space. 

The wedding was intimate, with only 50 guests, so I got a chance to interact with almost everyone! I attended the reception for four hours, and only needed to do 10 overtime sketches. The couple also ordered custom thank-you stickers to put on the back of the sketch’s envelopes. Live wedding sketches are one of the most unique and personal favors you can gift to your wedding guests, and I was so happy to contribute to this wedding. 

Hire a Live Wedding Illustrator Who Goes Above and Beyond 

I am so glad I got to work this wedding at the Omni Scottsdale! Because of my close friend’s wedding the day after, I left this wedding exactly at the contracted time and dashed right to the airport. As a live fashion illustrator and freelance designer, one of my absolute favorite times of the year is New York Bridal Fashion Week. I mean, can you blame me? All these incredible designers in one place, displaying new fashions, starting trends, and determining the direction of the wedding industry for the next few months! It’s practically heaven for a fashion junkie like myself.

Though I wasn’t able to attend in person this year, I paid close attention to what was happening online! And here, I’ll break down some new trends I’m seeing, my thoughts on them, and what this means for the future of bridal fashion! 

Trends I Noticed at NYBFW  

When you’ve spent a long time studying fashion, you can notice similarities across designers. This year, I was able to spot a few trends that I expect to see more of in the upcoming months! First, I saw bubble hems, dropped basque waistlines, open backs, and delicate draping with tulle and silk. I also saw an influx of color, patterns, and lace layers! 

A Fashion Illustrator’s Take on NYBFW Trends 

If I’m going to be completely honest with you, I am not thrilled about bubble hems making a comeback. I think they should stay in the early 2000s. However, I am so happy to see all of the new shapes that are making their way into bridal fashion. Designers are embracing color and texture, expanding what is typically considered “bridal.” I’m also happy to see that basque waists are still going strong, as they’re a personal favorite of mine. I also love that bridal separates are becoming more common! They allow for more interesting, unusual bridal looks. 

The Future of Bridal Fashion According to NYBFW 

You know the main thing I noticed at NYBFW? People are having fun with bridal fashion! Instead of wearing what they “think” they should wear, marriers are incorporating their personality into their wedding day looks. Plus, more people are thrifting their wedding outfits. Some are even reconstructing heirloom dresses to create something new! I love seeing how people take something that has already been loved and turn it into something different. It’s a great way to pay homage to the past and cut down on waste in the fashion industry.

Different styles 

I offer digital and paper live illustrations for weddings and events. If you choose to have paper illustrations, I will complete them with markers, pens, and colored pencils. Digital sketches will be completed at your event and then emailed to you with a link to purchase a print that will be shipped to you. 

Keep in mind, I only offer paper or digital sketches per event. Choose which style you like best and I will capture your event as it unfolds! 

Adding multiple artists 

Are you having a larger event? Consider adding additional artists! Personally, I can sketch seven guests per hour, which limits me to less than 150 illustrations during your event. If you add another artist, even more guests can participate in this unique experience - and have the coolest favor to remember your event by! 

Custom borders

Did you know you could customize your illustration’s borders? Whatever your vision is, we can match it. Some people want to include words on the border, or art from their invitations, or even just a few doodles in the corners. We can decide on a custom border that seamlessly blends with the rest of your event. 

You can even choose to have a custom background on your illustration! However, if you choose to include a background, your final sketches will be digital. 

Thank you Stickers & Travel Envelopes 

If you’re already including live illustrations at your wedding or event, why not add on some stickers and envelopes? The envelopes I offer are stiff, protecting your art from being bent and folded. And if you’re going to secure your envelope with anything, it might as well be a custom sticker, right? These options are also great ways to personalize your thank you cards. 

Full face sketches 

Many of my live illustrations for weddings and events are faceless figures, but that’s not the only option. To truly create a one-of-a-kind experience for your guests, you can choose to add full-face sketches to your package. Sketching a full face takes longer, but it is an option for any live event! 

Calligrapher in Boston 

Looking for a live illustrator for an event in Boston? You’re in luck! We’ve partnered with a calligrapher who can add a special touch of elegance to your finished piece. Depending on their availability, we can add beautiful calligraphy names to each illustration of your guests.

While once thought to protect brides from evil spirits on their wedding day, veils have stood the test of time to become an iconic wedding day accessory. From tiny birdcage styles to opulent cathedral-length veils and even wedding capes, iterations of this design are synonymous with wedding fashion. As a wedding illustrator with a background in fashion design, I noticed that most veils on the market looked very similar – white or ivory tulle with lace or minimal beading. And while there’s nothing wrong with that classic style, it simply doesn’t fit all marriers or weddings. That’s why I started offering custom wedding veils and capes: so every nearlywed could have a veil that perfectly reflects their style, taste, and wedding design. 

Designing a Custom Wedding Veil 

Designing a custom veil or cape is a very hands-on process for my couples. First, I have my clients send me photos of their wedding outfit, along with any inspiration photos they like of other veils or designs. I also ask that they send me any mood boards for their overall wedding design, so that everything feels cohesive. We then chat about their budget, timeline, and where the veil or cape needs to be shipped. We’ll get a general feel for length and style, while leaving the design open-ended until we find the perfect fabrics and embellishments. 

Once I have a general idea of what my client is looking for, it’s time to go shopping! Sourcing supplies is one of the most important parts of custom veil design, and I keep my clients as involved in the process as possible. I let my clients know what day and time I’ll be shopping so I can text them photos throughout the process and get real-time feedback. This teamwork is what allows me to create truly bespoke designs that perfectly fit each nearlywed. 

After all the supplies are acquired, it’s finally time to sew! This process can take anywhere from weeks to months depending on the intricacy of the design. Whether that involves hand-cutting lace applique or attaching hundreds of beads, I make sure that every inch of the veil can withstand the wear of a wedding day, while looking absolutely perfect for your photos. Making each custom veil or cape is a true labor of love. I don’t take it lightly that my couples have entrusted me with such a significant part of their wedding. 

A Unique Crystal Veil for a Silver Wedding Dress

This bride contacted me looking for a custom veil that would match her unique wedding dress. She chose to wear her mom’s wedding dress on her wedding day, which was actually a silver evening gown. Because of this, white and ivory veils simply didn’t match, and she knew that custom was the way to go. 

During the sourcing process, I came across this gorgeous, cool grey tulle that I knew would go perfectly with her dress while still feeling light and bridal. We added tiny silver crystals scattered around the veil to match the rhinestones and shiny lace of the gown. Since the dress itself didn’t have a train, we chose a fingertip-length silhouette, preventing the veil from overshadowing the dress. The result was a beautiful, delicate veil that perfectly complemented her unique wedding gown. 

Colorful Floral Wedding Cape 

One of my first bridal cape designs was for this bride. She was a nontraditional bride who knew she wanted a unique alternative to a veil. She had chosen a simple A-line wedding gown and wanted to go all out on a fun and unique cape design, incorporating fall colors. 

I immediately knew I wanted to use Italian tulle as the base of the cape because of its soft texture and perfect draping. We then shopped together for lace fabrics and found three that perfectly complemented her vision. First, we chose an ivory lace to create the cape's border, with a leafy vine motif that would stand out against the florals. I then created appliques from sequin floral lace and colorful 3D florals, creating a fun garden-inspired look on her cathedral-length cape. 

Royal Length Petal Veil 

My longest custom veil to date was for this bride. She described herself as “extra” but also wanted each element of her look to be balanced. Her wedding dress was a satin ballgown with a cathedral-length train and sparkle on the bodice and arms. She had a custom-made crystal crown and wanted a veil to match. I immediately knew that a veil with that much beading would be too heavy, so instead, I took inspiration from one of her example photos featuring ivory petals. 

The end product was an extra royal-length veil in a light ivory tulle that was the full length of my living room! I ordered a special silk organza from the UK and hand-cut petals, which I then hand-sewed onto the tulle in an ombre pattern. The result was a jaw-dropping statement veil that wouldn’t weigh her down and seamlessly blended with the rest of her wedding attire.

Abigail and Brian's wedding in Myrtle Beach was an unforgettable weekend with a beautiful garden venue and cherished Southern traditions. Held at the breathtaking Brookgreen Gardens, the couple blended classic Southern traditions with a lively, fun party atmosphere. But what really made this wedding day stand out were the live wedding illustrations – a unique touch that Abigail and Brian’s guests will remember for years to come!

Brookgreen Gardens Wedding 

Brookgreen Gardens is a gorgeous wedding venue just outside of Myrtle Beach. This members-only venue is a sculpture garden with towering oak trees and incredible art around every corner. The outdoor ceremony space is decorated with hundreds of hanging lights, creating an ethereal setting for exchanging your vows. After the ceremony, guests made their way over to the outdoor cocktail hour space, which surrounds a small water feature, before walking through a beautiful lit garden path to the reception tent. 

This space is unlike any wedding venue I’ve ever seen and truly speaks for itself! The incredible plants, art, and lighting create a warm, secret-garden ambiance that transports your guests into a fairytale for the evening. With such an incredible space, you really don’t need much decor to create a gorgeous backdrop for your day.  The layout was also incredibly guest-friendly, with a seamless transition from the ceremony space to the cocktail hour, then to the tented reception.

Instead of a sit-down dinner, the couple opted for multiple food stations around the tent, giving guests plenty of options and a more relaxed dining experience. (Bonus: everything was delicious!)

Southern Wedding Traditions

As a destination wedding illustrator, I’m so fortunate to have experienced wedding traditions all over the country and the world, but this was one of my very first southern weddings! It was so fun getting to see all of the unique southern wedding traditions, including Abigail and Brian’s large wedding party. Abigail and Brian included almost 40 of their friends and family in their ceremony, including what they called an “honorary wedding party”. This was such a sweet way to show their loved ones how much they appreciate them and give them their moment to shine!

With such a large wedding party, the reception entrances were just as elaborate as the ceremony. But instead of a traditional introduction, they turned it into a full-on dance party, with each group making their entrance in a fun and energetic way.

Another southern wedding tradition that was new to me was Abigail’s pre-wedding bridal portraits! Abigail had professional bridal portraits taken before the wedding, which were printed and displayed at cocktail hour. I love that this allowed her to see her hair, makeup, and dress all together before the big day, so she knew everything would be perfect for the wedding. Plus, it makes for beautiful wedding decor and doubles as artwork for your home. 

Live Wedding Sketches for a Myrtle Beach Wedding

To accommodate all of their guests, Abigail and Brian hired two artists to sketch for five hours on their wedding day. This is a great option for couples with larger weddings, as there are only so many illustrations I can make in a few hours! In this case, we still had a few guests who could not get sketches on the day of the wedding, so Abigail and Brian reached out with some photos, and I was able to sketch and mail them the illustrations after the wedding. 

As the evening went on, the temperature dropped, which made me extra grateful for my layers! It was a perfect reminder that while sketching live is an art, it's also about adapting to the elements and keeping guests comfortable as they pose. Guests only need to pose for a quick second in front of the camera, and then they can get back to dancing!

Abigail and Brian’s wedding at Brookgreen Gardens was truly spectacular. From the incredible wedding venue to the sweet southern traditions, it was a stunning day from start to finish. I was instantly fascinated by her job – after all, my college degree is in fashion design! We had a lovely chat about Kim’s work, her clientele, and how she can create looks that most people only dream of! Kim primarily works with couples getting married in France or Italy, a lot of her couples are Americans having destination weddings. Q&A with Kim Stokes

What is a wedding stylist?

A wedding stylist is there to help a bride define and curate her unique wedding style. A bride’s wedding style should be like her everyday style but amped up! A great wedding stylist will look at your everyday style and see how that can be elevated to a bridal level. A stylist will suggest bridal brands that will work for your style, as well as shoe and accessory options to bring a whole look together.

What does a stylist do on the wedding day itself?

On the wedding day itself a Bridal Stylist will manage your entire wardrobe, all day. We make a Style File, which includes photographs of all your outfits, including shoes and accessories. We start by making sure that all elements of all your outfits are on hand and nothing is missing. Outfits are then collated together, including everything for the rehearsal dinner look, getting ready look, ceremony look, etc. Once we’re happy that every item of clothing is accounted for, we then check all the outfits for damage, make repairs and adjustments as necessary, and steam everything. After laying out all the clothes, we help the very thing run on time by ensuring that the bride and bridal party start getting ready at the right time.

We’re on hand throughout shoots with photographers and videographers to help you move between locations and adjust your look as necessary at every stage to make sure you look fabulous in every photo.

How does it work with a destination wedding?

Having a Bridal Stylist and Day-Of Dresser is even more important for a destination wedding. Transporting wedding gowns, evening dresses, suits, tuxedos, etc, is a tricky business. Items could go missing or get damaged along the way. Having a trusted team on hand at the wedding location, with all the equipment we need, ready to repair or adjust as needed, is a necessary guarantee for complete peace of mind. 

If someone wants a stylist for the whole process, do you offer virtual consultations?

The styling process is so personal that it’s best done in person, but we understand that it’s not always possible. We offer a partial virtual process. We can start off with a virtual meeting to discuss your style influences and what direction you’d like to go in for your bridal style. Then we set up in-person appointments at bridal boutiques to try dresses, where I’ll be on-hand to personally assist the bride. I’m always shocked to hear how many brides go wedding dress shopping by themselves! Take a trusted friend or, even better, your Bridal Stylist with you!!

After you’ve found the dress of your dreams, fitting appointments for alterations and adjustments can be done virtually. Then it’ll all come together for your big day!

When, during the planning process, should someone hire a stylist for a destination wedding?

It’s best to bring your Bridal Stylist into the process as soon as possible. As a bride, you want to make sure that every major element of your wedding blends together seamlessly. The venue, dress, florals, decor – everything should complement each other perfectly. We recommend starting the process of finding your wedding gown at least 8-12 months before your wedding.

Could you shop/buy for the bride locally while they’re in their home country? For the welcome dinner, brunch, after party, etc. 

Yes, absolutely. Once we have your style in mind, I can find pieces for you locally. Wearing pieces by local designers is a great way to incorporate parts of your wedding destination even more into your wedding.

For many, your wedding dress is one of the most special and expensive pieces of clothing you'll ever own. But what do you do with it after the wedding is over? Figuring out what to do with your dress in the days after your wedding can feel overwhelming. Whether you want to preserve it for the future, give it new life, or repurpose it in a meaningful way, there are plenty of options beyond simply storing it in your closet. As a bridal fashion illustrator, I’ve seen couples use and store their dresses in a variety of unique ways. Keep reading for my favorite ways to preserve or use your wedding dress after the big day. 

Preserving Your Wedding Dress 

Your wedding day is over, and it’s time to find a home for your wedding dress. Can you just stick it back in the garment bag and call it a day? If you want to prevent it from turning yellow with age – no. Since wedding dresses are made with fine materials, they need to be treated with care. To preserve your dress, simply take it to a trusted dry cleaner and ask them to clean and preserve the gown. After dry cleaning, your wedding dress will be wrapped in acid-free paper and placed inside a box to protect it from dust, sunlight, and pests. Then, you can store it somewhere away from light and temperature fluctuations, where it will be preserved for years to come.

Creating a Dress to Rewear 

Did you love your wedding dress so much that you want to find a way to re-wear it? There are various ways to alter your dress to make it less bridal and more appropriate for reuse. I’ve seen brides dye dresses, shorten hems, and even turn them into tops and skirts! Whether you want to wear your dress as a wedding guest or just out to dinner on your anniversary, the sky is the limit when it comes to altering your dress in a way that suits you. 

Passing Your Dress On 

If you don’t plan to wear your wedding dress again and dislike the idea of it sitting in storage, there are a variety of ways you can pass on your wedding dress to another couple. Websites like StillWhite allow you to sell your gently used wedding dress to future marriers. Or you can donate your dress to someone in need! Here in the DMV, we have Cherie Sustainable Bridal – a shop that operates 100% on donated dresses and donates all proceeds to their non-profit. But there are also tons of great non-profits that you can donate to through their websites, such as Brides for a Cause or Angel Gowns. No matter where you send your dress, it’s sure to make someone very happy. 

Displaying Your Wedding Dress 

For those who consider their wedding dress their pride and joy, there’s no better way to appreciate it than to display it in their home! If you have the space for a mannequin or full-size frame, your wedding dress can serve as an incredible statement piece. However, if space is tight or you’re looking for a more understated way to show off your dress, consider a custom illustration. This piece of art is a great way to show off your beautiful dress while the real thing stays safe in storage or finds a new life with another bride.

As a live wedding illustrator who often works in DC, I’ve connected with some absolutely incredible wedding planners in the area who have worked at dozens of local venues. Together, we’ve curated a list of the best wedding venues in DC to make your search easier and ensure your celebration is nothing short of extraordinary!

Roberts & Co. Events’ Favorite DC Wedding Venues

Tabitha Roberts started Roberts & Co. Events in 2008 and has planned more than five hundred weddings since. Her accolades are endless, including being named “Top 50 Planners in 50 States” by Daily Meal and “Editor's Choice for Event Planners” by the Washingtonian for four years running! They offer event services throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia and are an incredible source of inspiration for any couple in the DC area. 

Perry Belmont House 

The first wedding venue that Tabitha mentioned during our discussion was the Perry Belmont House. This venue has the iconic historic charm of a DC venue with versatile event spaces. Built in 1906, the building was designed by a French architect and heavily inspired by the chateaus of that time. The rich decorative detail of the artwork and design lends perfectly to a traditional or elegant wedding. We love their high fireplace mantles for beautiful florals and grand staircase for portraits. If you’re looking for a wedding venue that gives true homage to historical DC, this is the perfect venue. 

National Museum of Women in the Arts 

The recently renovated National Museum of Women in the Arts is an incredible art museum venue that will leave your guests speechless. Their two-story event space, lined with marble staircases and crystal chandeliers, is opulent and grand while still feeling modern. Tabitha noted that she loves that couples can bring in a variety of catering teams to build a custom event. Plus, the event staff at NMWA are some of the most welcoming and warm people we’ve had the pleasure to work with!

Best DC Venues According to B Astonished Events

De’Angela Calder is a lead planner with B Astonished Events, a luxury DC and destination wedding planner. Born and raised in Washington, DC, with 9 years of event planning experience, De’Angela is truly an expert in the DC wedding space. Her weddings have been featured in some of the top national wedding publications, and she’s an absolute joy to work with!

Dockmaster at the Wharf

If you’re looking for a unique venue for an intimate wedding, the Dockmaster building at The Wharf is the perfect spot. Located at the end of a 450-foot pier, it offers a stunning 270-degree view that we absolutely love! With both indoor and outdoor spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows, the Dockmaster building is truly one of a kind and such an underrated venue in Washington, DC. 

Conrad Hotel DC

Another one of De’Angela’s favorite DC venues is the Conrad Hotel. From its modernist lobby interior to the elegant white marble details, this venue is a dream for contemporary couples. It’s the perfect venue for couples who love the ease of a classic hotel ballroom wedding but want an updated, stylish backdrop for their day. B Astonished Events frequents the Conrad Hotel at least once or twice a year for events and always enjoys working with their in-house team. 

Vida Events’ Top DC Wedding Venues

Megan Lentz is the owner and lead planner at Vida Events, a NOVA-based wedding planner who focuses on fun. She’s planned events in over 20 different countries, and her work been featured in dozens of publications, including British Vogue.

Pendry Washington, DC - The Wharf

Megan’s favorite DC wedding venue is the Pendry DC. This luxury hotel is located right on the water, in a popular area known as The Wharf. The ballroom has an incredibly unique design, with modern chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows that brighten up the space. And for couples looking for a fun and funky twist on the classic hotel wedding, their Moonraker North room used for cocktail hour is the perfect spot, with a geometric floor and rooftop views of the city. 

National Museum of Women in the Arts 

Megan also named the National Museum of Women in the Arts as a top DC venue, in agreement with Tabitha. If we haven’t already convinced you to check out this space, I don’t know what will! The combination of sleek architecture and incredible art is unlike anything else in the city. 

Best Venues According to Christine McFarlane Events

Christine McFarlane Events is based next door in Baltimore, Maryland, but she and her team plan dozens of events in DC every year. Christine launched CME in 2017 and has quickly become a respected figure throughout Maryland and the DMV, with accolades including The Knot Best of Weddings and Wedding Wire Couples’ Choice Awards.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a gorgeous historic event space in downtown DC. Its charming outdoor portico offers one of the best views of the Washington Monument in the city, making it the perfect spot for a quintessential DC wedding ceremony. Indoors, the space boasts an arched ceiling and gilded details, adding stately elegance to any event. From the ornate hallways to the beautiful library to the charming portico, all areas of this venue embody classic DC beauty. 

Autoshop

Autoshop is a unique blank industrial venue just steps away from Union Market. Its exposed bricks and beams, paired with its tall ceilings and large windows, offer a raw, unrefined charm that perfectly complements its modern design. We love its rooftop terrace, which features a flower garden and a view of the Union Market sign, which serves as the perfect outdoor location for your ceremony or cocktail hour. 

DC Weddings with Samia Lynn Designs 

Although I travel all over the world for my wedding illustrations, DC weddings will always have my heart. From luxury hotels to historic mansions and museums, the wedding venues there are truly unique and I’m so grateful I get to experience them over and over again. Every year, Pantone announces its color of the year, which “expresses a global mood and an attitude, reflecting collective desire in the form of a single, distinct hue.” The 2025 color of the year has been announced as Mocha Mousse, a soft and warm tawny brown shade. As the color of the year, we expect to start seeing this shade incorporated into wedding designs. From linens to stationery and even bridesmaid dresses, how do you think Mocha Mousse will make its impact in the wedding industry? 

Brown Wedding Accents

I tend to lean towards bright colors in my work and everyday life, but I do believe that Mocha Mousse can be a great accent color on a wedding day. I think a mix of brown tones is perfect for couples who want a more neutral wedding palette. I picture this shade as being popular with boho or minimalist couples who are going for a warm, cozy, simple vibe. Or, for couples who are looking to add browns in a more subtle way, it is the perfect complementary tone to creams and greens. I think we’ll see a lot of this shade during the summer and fall, and expect it to taper off in the winter when it may feel too dark and drab. 

You can incorporate this warm brown shade on your wedding day in so many different ways. I immediately picture brown linens and glassware on your tablescapes, along with dried flowers. It’s also a beautiful shade for textural pieces like rugs and lounge furniture. And, of course, we can’t forget how flattering brown dresses and suits can be for so many people. Chocolate cake and espresso martinis are obvious (and delicious!) go-tos as well.

Brown Bridesmaid Dresses and Aso-Ebi

I recently got to work with a wonderful bride who was using brown in a major way on her wedding day. My bride, like me, is a first-generation American. Her family is from Nigeria, and she is very connected with her culture and heritage. Brown is a very common color in Nigerian weddings and goes perfectly with the green attire she’s planning to wear. She decided to have her bridesmaids and family members wear brown as part of a tradition known as aso-ebi. Aso-Ebi is a tradition where family members of the couple wear a specific fabric to identify themselves and show their support for the marriers. 

My bride requested a digital illustration that would be turned into cards so she could ask her loved ones and bridesmaids to participate in this beautiful tradition. She wanted the cards to be creative and personal, so we worked together with her inspiration photos and vision to create a group sketch. I’m so happy with how the illustration turned out, and I can’t wait to see the photos of her wedding this fall so I can see how the Aso-ebi looks in person!

As we approach the start of the new year, I find it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past twelve months with gratitude and excitement for what’s ahead! Being a wedding and fashion illustrator brings me so much joy, and taking time to evaluate my journey helps me appreciate the incredible moments that shaped this year. From projects that fueled my creativity and personal growth to those that challenged me in new ways, each experience has been a stepping stone. I feel endlessly grateful for the amazing couples, breathtaking designs, and unforgettable opportunities this year brought my way—and I can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store!

A Year of Firsts

This year included so many opportunities to broaden my horizons and be a part of new amazing projects. In addition to all my amazing weddings, I illustrated my first baby shower and anniversary party this year. I also had my first ever live illustration at an international destination wedding! Even my commission projects provided some fun new opportunities, like illustrating my first wedding cape and champagne bottle! It was truly a year of growth and experimentation. I’m always excited when clients come to me with fun, creative ideas—there’s nothing I love more than finding ways to bring their visions to life! The Travel Bug 

As many of you know, travel is such a huge part of who I am and, therefore, a part of my business as well. This year provided so many new travel opportunities, for which I’m so incredibly grateful! I visited Maine, South Carolina, and Louisiana for work and even went on my first international business retreat in the south of France. Even in states that I visit frequently, there were new experiences, like my first-ever Cape Cod wedding. Of course, I couldn’t limit travel to work trips, so I also visited two new countries for leisure – Belize and Egypt! So no matter where your wedding (or event!) takes you, we can be there.

Big Names 

One of the most exciting parts of this year was all of the big-name brands I was able to connect with. I worked on projects with Brunello Cucinelli and Talbots and even worked backstage at the Armani fashion show! In addition, I was featured in Style Me Pretty for a wedding I illustrated. Being recognized by these brands is such an honor, and I’m so excited to see where these connections and relationships lead!

I truly couldn’t have asked for a more incredible 2024 season. I worked with dozens of couples, visited three continents, and made friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Although you probably know me for my illustrations, you may not know that I actually have a degree in Fashion Design. Fashion has always been a huge part of my life, but ever since joining the wedding industry, I have developed a true love for wedding gowns, especially vintage gowns. 

My amazing friend Bre is a bridal designer in Boston specializing in custom work and vintage wedding dress reconstruction. I was so interested in her work restoring and modernizing vintage gowns that I knew I had to share it with all of you! Keep reading for all the details about Bremelia’s wedding dress reconstruction services and how she can bring life back into an old dress!

Dress Reconstruction by Bremelia

What dresses or clothing can I transform? 

We can reconstruct mom's and grandmother's dresses and veils. 

How does the process work? 

We start with an in-person consultation to see what kind of condition the dress is in and to see what you are hoping to achieve with the new look. Then, we work in increments in each fitting; the dress will evolve until the design is complete. We like to take the fittings slowly with reconstructions because we are working with such special garments. 

How long does it take? 

Each dress is different, but I would allow 8 - 10 months for a comfortable timeline. We do like to take our time with reconstructions. 

What's the average cost? 

As of the posting of this blog, reconstruction starts at $1,000 and can go to $3,000, depending on how complex the design is. 

What options do I have for a transformation? 

The options are limitless; however, we usually like to keep the integrity of the original design while refreshing the overall look to be more modern. Sometimes, that means removing the old skirt and making a new one, reconstructing the neckline, or removing sleeves.  

What if the original dress doesn't fit? 

Not to worry; we can always tailor it as needed. If it's too small, which happens pretty often, we can build a new back. 

Can I just use pieces/materials and not the dress itself? 

Absolutely.

Can I add embellishment to a simple dress? 

Absolutely.

Can I combine dresses? 

Yes, as long as they work soundly together. 

What if there's not enough material on the original dress? 

We would likely need to source a comparable fabric to achieve the desired look. 

What if the original is SUPER old? Or if there's discoloration? 

If the dress was not properly preserved, discoloration is common, and there is often not too much we can do about it. We usually like to embrace the fact that the dress is old; sometimes, it can look even more special and vintage. If there are any repairs that need to be done, we usually handle that as it evolves.

As a wedding illustrator with a fashion design background, one of my favorite things about weddings is the incredible outfits. From elaborate ballgowns to classic tuxedos and everything in between, I always love seeing the thought and detail that couples put into their fashion choices. I’ve loved the trend of second wedding day looks in recent years. After all, this day only comes once in a lifetime, so why not squeeze in a second dress? If you’re planning a wedding outfit change on your big day, keep reading for everything you need to know!

Second Looks 

Your second wedding day look can be absolutely anything you want it to be! In 2024, we saw a lot of mini dresses and jumpsuits, which are perfect for getting down on the dance floor. Grooms have opted for customized t-shirts or just a vest with no button-down underneath. Or, for those incredibly chill couples, you can even change into matching sweatsuits with customized text to really get comfy. Don’t limit yourself to black and white either - second looks are a great time to bring in color and sparkle to your dance floor! 

And of course, we couldn’t forget to talk about a second pair of shoes. If you’re someone who plans to be on the dance floor all night, you’ll want to make sure your feet are comfortable! We’ve seen couples with matching sneakers or even fun Crocs on their big day. 

When to Change 

There are a few different times throughout the wedding day that make sense for your outfit change. Some couples prefer to change at the end of cocktail hour so they can make their reception entrance in their new looks. This is a great option if you’re still wearing a formal or semi-formal outfit as your second look, and it allows you to have more movement during your first dance. 

If you prefer to do your first dance in your main wedding attire, you can change into your second look at the end of dinner. This allows you to make a grand entrance in your new outfits to open the dance floor. Or, if your outfit change doesn’t involve getting completely undressed (think a mini dress with an overskirt), you can even do a grand reveal right on the dance floor! 

Finally, if you love your wedding attire and aren’t quite ready to change out of it during the main wedding reception, you can change before your after party! After-party changes are a great option for more comfortable and casual looks. 

The Logistics of Wedding Outfit Changes 

Although an outfit change may seem like a minor detail, it’s important that you include it in your wedding day timeline and let your vendors know. First, it’s essential to make sure that nothing important happens when you’re out of the room. Second, your planner or coordinator can help make sure that there is an appropriate space for you to change. Venue bathrooms are often far too small to get in and out of a wedding dress, so you’ll need to use some sort of bridal suite or other private space. 

Additionally, your team will want to ensure you’ve allotted enough time for your change. If your dress has a lot of buttons or you need to change shapewear, you may need more time than you expect. Plus, will you want photos of your partner helping you into your new outfit? What about photos of your second entrance? Having all of your vendors on the same page is key to a smooth transition.

Weddings are constantly evolving. What we now would consider a “traditional” wedding day, is very different than what weddings looked like 100 years ago. So why not break the mold altogether? There’s very few actual requirements for a wedding – there must be a declaration of intent and a pronouncement of the marriage. Other than that, it’s totally up to you! As a live wedding illustrator, I’ve seen tons of weddings with out-of-the-box ideas that beautifully celebrate the couple. If the standard Western wedding doesn’t feel right for your big day, here are some fun, non-traditional wedding ideas for you to consider. 

Intimate Ceremony 

An easy way to add a non-traditional spin on your wedding day is by opting for an intimate ceremony. While you still may want to celebrate with all your friends and family, the ceremony can be reserved for only those closest to you. After all, it can be daunting to share personal vows in front of over a hundred people. Sticking with only a handful of guests can eliminate any stage fright and feel incredibly special. Then, you can meet the rest of your guests at a separate venue for your cocktail hour and reception. 

Fun & Unique Add-Ons

There are so many incredible ways you can spice up your wedding day with fun add-ons. Whether that’s with entertainment like an aerialist or a fun interactive guest experience like a live illustrator. Or if food is your main priority, you can opt for some fun and out-of-the-box late-night treats, like White Castle or an ice cream truck! Not sure if you can fit a fun add-on in your budget? Consider asking close friends and family to chip in for one in lieu of a gift. 

Informal Reception

Another great non-traditional wedding option is having an informal reception. And no, I don’t mean the dress code. Instead of having the reception flow from formal introductions to speeches and parent dances, have your DJ jump right into an open dance floor set. You can even opt for a cocktail-style dinner with stations and passed hors d'oeuvres to really allow for a laid-back flow. And if you still want to hear all the wonderful things your wedding party was going to say in their speeches, ask them to speak at the rehearsal dinner instead! 

Niche Wedding Themes 

Having a wedding theme isn’t uncommon, but what about theming your wedding about a very specific niche interest? Instead of a general vineyard wedding, you could theme your day around the fictional vineyard from The Parent Trap! Or if you prefer a more general theme, try to break it down into subthemes for all your wedding events. For example, your Italian-themed wedding could be complimented by a tomato-themed bridal shower, a bachelorette at the Venetian in Vegas, and a honeymoon in Rome! You can choose anything that’s special to you and your partner for your theme - from movies to books and beyond. 

Embrace your Inside Jokes 

When planning a non-traditional wedding day, there are no limits. So why not include a nod to special moments or jokes between you and your partner? Have your reception at the bowling alley where they first said, “I love you.” Instead of a cake, have Little Debbie’s for dessert because they always call you their “honey bun.” Your wedding is a celebration of your relationship, so why not infuse it throughout the day as much as you can? 

Non-Traditional Weddings with SamiaLynn 

As a live wedding illustrator I attend dozens of weddings every year. From the standard American weddings to different cultural ceremonies, there are so many different ways that couples choose to celebrate. But my favorite weddings are always the ones where the couple has opted to do things their own way. While traditions can be absolutely beautiful, it’s also okay to break out of the mold and do what feels right for you.

The way that some people look forward to the week between Christmas and New Year's, I look forward to New York Bridal Fashion Week. Twice a year, the top bridal designers in the world descend on one of my favorite cities to show their collections. With my background in fashion design and my career as a wedding illustrator, it’s truly the most exciting time of year! Although I couldn’t make it in person this year, I still had to recap some of my favorite trends that hit the runway. 

New York Bridal Fashion Week 

While every designer did an absolutely incredible job bringing their own unique vision to the runways this season, there were a few trends we noticed across the board. First, multiple wedding looks are here to stay! We saw designers leaning into wedding pieces for all types of events, from reception dresses to pre-event attire. While the focus will always remain on the classic wedding gown, it was refreshing to see such a variety of styles. We also saw cinched waists on every runway – it’s all about enhancing your form! Whether a natural waist, drop waist, or basque waist, there was consistently a form-fitting element to every gown. And finally, designers across the board opted for unique textures. More than just traditional laces, we saw iridescent fabric, long textured trains, and even multiple types of laces on the same gown. We love a tactile design and are excited to see this trend continue. 

Mini Dresses with Structured Skirts 

One of the first major trends we noticed this year was the mini dress! Most notably, mini dresses with structured, bell-shaped skirts. While reception dresses have become popular over the past few years, this shortened hemline is a fun, flirty option that we absolutely love! Marriers are prioritizing comfort and the ability to dance the night away, while still looking incredibly chic. It also brings the question – will we see hemlines begin to rise on traditional wedding gowns as well?

Straight Necklines

Goodbye, sweetheart – hello, modern straight lines. Last year, we saw square necklines becoming more popular, and this year, the angular top was seen on many runways. This crisp, clean line is the perfect design to pair with a statement necklace or even a scarf. Or, pair a straight neckline with a basque waist for the perfect blend of vintage and modern design.

Skinny Scarves

Skinny scarves paired with a strapless dress have been all over runways this year, so it’s no surprise they have officially made their way into bridal. The look feels reminiscent of  Y2K fashion and even of some dupatta styling in Eastern cultures. Most bridal designers opted for silk or chiffon scarves, allowing the fabric to cascade down the wearer’s back. The accessory not only feels incredibly luxe but also serves as a unique alternative to a necklace.

Basque Waists 

First popular in the 19th century, this bodice shape was brought back into the mainstream by Dua Lipa during the 2023 Met Gala when she wore a Chanel gown from the archives. The design is characterized by a V-shaped or U-shaped dip just below the natural waistline. As opposed to a drop waist, the basque waist still sits at the natural waist on the side, but lowers in the center. It perfectly cinches the waist, shows off curves, and is flattering on every body type. Personally, this is one of my favorite bridal trends this year! I absolutely LOVE the basque waistline and think it’s so flattering.

Corset Bodices 

Corsets are nothing new to the bridal world, but this year, we noticed a big change in the design of these pieces. While previously, corset gowns tended to be sheer with exposed boning, this year, we’re seeing more luxe fabrics and exaggerated designs. House Of Gilles, Ines Di Santo, Nadia Manjarrez Bridal, and Vivienne Westwood all embraced this look with incredible pieces that felt more high fashion than lingerie. I believe this ties into the trends of fuller skirts and exaggerated hip silhouettes that we’re seeing across fashion runways outside of the bridal world.

Off The Shoulder

While off-the-shoulder gowns have been popular for the last decade, this year we saw designers moving away from the bohemian aesthetic. This new, elevated look is a spin on romantic, Victorian era design with soft draping in luxurious fabrics. We’ve also seen many of the designers make the sleeves removable, allowing the wearer more flexibility in their look and full range of motion.

Two-Piece Looks 

The most unique trend we saw hit the runway this season was the two-piece wedding look. Designers have begun to lean into bridal separates to embrace the trend of multiple looks on a wedding day. These looks not only allow for easier customization, but also allow brides to have multiple looks in one. The most common of these looks we saw included removable sleeves, overskirts, toppers and capes, but we also saw options that included bridal separates such as tops and skirts. While these looks are still mostly designed for reception outfits, we’re starting to see a few designers test out the waters in traditional bridalwear as well.

Bridal Fashion with SamiaLynn Designs

As a wedding illustrator, I find it to be incredibly important to stay on top of the bridal fashion trends. Watching and learning from New York Bridal Fashion Week is one of my favorite parts of my job. I love to see how looks evolve over the years, and how my couples interpret these fashion trends into their own days. One thing about me is that I absolutely love to travel. When Amy and Jamie reached out about having me fly down to Mexico to create live guest sketches at their destination wedding, I was 100% on board! It was such a fun weekend filled with love and laughter in paradise! I’m so glad to share their incredible day with you. 

Amy and Jamie’s Mexico Destination Wedding 

Amy and Jamie knew from the start that they wanted a destination wedding in Mexico. Their blended family includes six kids (three from each side), and they’ve visited this resort on their family vacations. Between their love of the beach and the sentimental value the area holds, it was a no-brainer that they should say their vows here! They decided on Finest Playa Mujeres thanks to an amazing past visit, and I think they made a fantastic choice.  I absolutely LOVED this resort, and it would be amazing to go back one day.

The entire weekend was so beautiful. The resort itself was incredible, with delicious drinks, friendly staff, and gorgeous beach views. I truly felt like I was in paradise! Amy and Jamie started the weekend with an all-white welcome party, which was so much fun. I attended as a guest, and since they wanted to keep my illustrations a surprise until the wedding, I spent the evening chatting with guests who began taking guesses at my role! Many guessed dancing or singing, but they were pleasantly surprised to find out my real contribution to the wedding!

Personal Touches 

When planning their intimate destination wedding, Amy and Jamie knew they wanted to really personalize their wedding day. Even the smallest details were customized and well thought-out. Guests were welcomed to the resort with custom luggage tags, and custom shotglasses filled with tequila served as the escort cards! One of my favorite details was the cocktail napkins with their text conversations printed on them. And of course, I created a sketch of each guests’ outfit which served as both a fun activity and a wedding favor.

As a wedding guest, one of the most difficult parts of a wedding can be figuring out what to wear. After all, you want to look your best while not standing out or causing any unwanted attention. Thankfully, it’s traditional for couples to dictate a dress code for their wedding day that will let you know their expectations for your attire. As a live wedding illustrator, I’ve seen many different dress codes, from Black-Tie to Casual, and they’re all fantastic as long as everyone knows how to dress. If you’re attending an upcoming wedding but are unsure what the dress code entails, read on for the full breakdown. 

Wedding Dress Codes 

Black-Tie 

A Black-Tie wedding is a formal evening event. Women should wear floor-length gowns made of high-quality materials and a pair of nice heels. Men should wear a tuxedo with a simple black tie or bowtie. Coattails and a cumberbund are not expected but are a great way to elevate the look, especially for wedding party members.

Black-Tie Optional 

The Black-Tie Optional dress code is great for elevated celebrations where you don’t necessarily want your guests to have to go out and rent or buy a tuxedo. This allows some flexibility for your guests to choose between the formal or black-tie dress codes. Women should still wear long dresses, but men can opt for a dark-colored suit instead of a tux. 

Formal 

The most common dress code we see at weddings is Formal. This is a step below Black Tie and a great option that allows your guests to wear what they already own. Women can wear a long or midi-length dress, or fancy jumpsuit with heels, while men can wear a nice suit. With this dress code, we often see more colors and patterns than we would at a black-tie wedding. 

Beach Formal or Tropical Chic

If you’re attending a destination wedding, you may see either of these dress codes. The focus of these dress codes is to dress elegantly while still being comfortable in the heat and on the sand. For men, a linen suit or dress pants with a white button-down is a great option. Women can opt for long, flowy dresses in light fabrics and fun colors. Sandals or wedges will help you to avoid heels sinking into the sand. 

Cocktail

For a slightly more relaxed or daytime wedding, a Cocktail dress code is a great option. This dress code allows women to opt for a shorter hemline with elevated silhouettes and materials. Dressy jumpsuits are also a great option! Men can opt for a suit in any color and even forgo a tie. 

Semi-Formal or Dressy Casual 

These two dress codes are used interchangeably and often parallel a “business casual” dress code you would see in a workplace. Think wrap dresses, jumpsuits, sports coats, and dress pants. Shoes can also be more casual, with options such as wedges or nice boots. 

Casual

A casual dress code is usually reserved for daytime outdoor weddings, such as those in the backyard. Although this is the most laid-back dress code, jeans and sneakers are still prohibited. Guests can opt for sundresses, sandals, khakis, button-downs, and other elevated everyday wear. 

Festive 

The newest dress code we’ve seen in the wedding industry is Festive. In general, this dress code asks guests to play with fun colors and patterns while opting for a Cocktail Attire level of formality. Think fun dresses with bows or ruffles and fun colored suits.

The dress code is a key part of any wedding day and should be easily accessible to guests on the invitation or website. One of the things I love most about wedding days is the elaborate wedding flowers. When else in your life do you get to work directly with a florist to design your dream florals? As a live wedding illustrator, I’ve seen many fun ways couples have incorporated flowers throughout their wedding day. Whether you’re having a garden-themed wedding or simply love flowers, here are some of my favorite ways I’ve seen them used. 

Add Flowers to Your Outfits

The first place to consider adding extra flowers on your wedding day is in your outfits! For partners wearing suits, you can opt for a flower pocket square or even a full flower lapel instead of a traditional boutonniere. Partners with long hair can choose a braid or similar style with small flowers woven in. And don’t forget floral fabrics! You can opt for a full floral dress or something more low-key, like a floral pattern lining on the inside of your suit. 

Cocktail Hour Flowers

Another fun place to add unexpected wedding flowers is cocktail hour. Edible flowers are great additions to drink and food – who wouldn’t want a lemon spritz topped with a pansy? You can even freeze them in ice cubes! I also love the idea of a bouquet bar at cocktail hour. Give your guests a fun activity that also doubles as a favor! And I’d be remiss not to mention incorporating florals into your live guest illustrations. At the Reception 

Of course, we can’t talk about wedding flowers without talking about the reception. Beyond the traditional centerpieces, there are so many fun and unique ways you can incorporate florals into this part of your day. For a big statement, consider a hanging arrangement over the dance floor or sweetheart table. Or, install a flower wall behind your sweetheart table or as a photo booth backdrop! For something more subtle, you can opt for individual blooms at each place setting. You can place them on top of the menu or attach them to each place card as a unique detail. 

Other Fun Ideas 

There are so many incredible things you can do with florals at your wedding, and they don’t have to be limited to the actual wedding day! For example, you can send dried or pressed flowers with your wedding invitations as a fun embellishment. I love seeing them attached to the stationery with a custom wax seal! Don’t want the flower fun to stop when the wedding’s over? Send your guests home with seeds as favors so they can grow them at home and think of you when they bloom.

Cocktail hour plays such an important role in a wedding day. It is the transition between the ceremony and the reception when guests can greet each other and relax. It’s the period when guests need to settle in so they can fully enjoy the party! So, why is it often overlooked? As a live wedding illustrator, I’ve seen many weddings with phenomenal receptions and ceremonies but bland, boring cocktail hours. Many couples don’t put a lot of time or effort into their cocktail hour simply because they won’t be there. If you’re planning on taking a lot of family photos or portraits during this time, it’s understandable that you would choose to prioritize the reception or ceremony. However, if you’re planning an elevated wedding, you need to step up your cocktail hour to match. If you’re looking for some tips and tricks to elevate your wedding cocktail hour, here are some of our favorite ideas. 

Cocktail Hour Music 

When guests step into your cocktail hour, one of the first things they notice is the music. This first impression can make or break the vibe. I love it when couples opt for an elevated choice like a string quartet or jazz trio for cocktail hour. Live musicians are such a classy detail, and they really change the energy in a space. Plus, if you’re incorporating your culture or heritage throughout your day, you can opt for musicians that reflect that. 

Food & Drink

Of course, food and drink are the most important part of cocktail hour. While everyone loves passed hors d'oeuvres, there are so many fun ways you can elevate this experience! Here in the DMV/northeast coast, a great addition is an oyster bar! There’s nothing that shouts “Chesapeake Bay” more than someone shucking raw oysters for your guests. Or if seafood isn’t your thing, you can add a grazing table to your cocktail hour. Everyone loves fancy meat and cheese! In the northeast, I’ve seen a lot of fun coffee bars. These are an especially great option if you have lots of guests who don’t drink alcohol or are having a brunch wedding. Tea is another great option – I’d love to work a wedding with a Boba bar! 

Cocktail Hour Seating

If you ask guests what their least favorite part of cocktail hour is, many will talk about the lack of seating. Often, we see cocktail hours without any seating at all! When planning your cocktail hour, consider adding some luxury seating options in addition to your standard high-top tables. We personally love the trend of adding a lounge space with plush armchairs and couches for guests to relax on. 

Interactive Experiences 

The best way to liven up your wedding cocktail hour is with interactive experiences for your guests! This gives them something to do in addition to sipping and snacking. A photo booth is a classic choice, but there are many other great options. There are living champagne walls, interactive seating charts, and more! A personal favorite of mine is Beer Burros in Texas – live donkeys that come around and pass out beer to your guests! And, of course, I can’t forget live wedding illustrations.  A live wedding illustrator will draw or paint your wedding guests so they have a sweet favor and piece of art to take home.

Wedding music sets the tone of your wedding day, especially the reception. Whether you opt for oldies, the latest hits, or everything in between – music is a critical part of your wedding day. So, who do you entrust with this important task? As a live wedding illustrator, I’ve attended dozens of weddings with both bands and DJs and have seen the pros and cons of both. Music is incredibly personal, so it’s important to sit down with your partner and figure out your top priorities. While you can’t go wrong with either vendor, here are a few tips to keep in mind while making your decision. 

Live Wedding Bands 

Having a live band at your wedding is a super fun luxury experience. If you love concerts, what better way to bring that vibe to your wedding day than with live music? Live bands are great at bringing upbeat energy to a wedding reception. However, with so many musicians involved, bands are a much more expensive entertainment choice than a DJ. In addition to paying all of the musicians for their time, you may also need to rent a stage and will have more vendor meals to pay for. Live bands cost, on average, around $2,400 more than a DJ, and that price can significantly vary based on region and experience. Overall, if you have the budget and want to prioritize a high-energy, interactive experience, a band is a great option. 

Wedding DJs

DJs are a classic wedding entertainment choice and for a good reason! A DJ has an endless library of music right at their fingertips. Good DJs are also trained to read a room, so they can adjust the music based on what you and your guests are enjoying most. Most DJs will double as emcees, making any necessary announcements during the reception, like parent dances and cake cutting. Since DJs usually work alone, they tend to be quite affordable. If you love dancing to the latest hits or simply just want to listen to the original versions of your favorite songs, a DJ might be the right choice for you. 

Wedding Music Playlist 

In the age of Spotify and Apple Music, couples have been questioning: Do I really need to hire someone to play music at my wedding? The answer is yes! While to an outsider, it may seem like you could just make a playlist and hit play, there is so much more that goes into your wedding day music and sound engineering. First, your music vendor provides all their own equipment that you would then need to rent, including microphones and speakers. You’d need to know how to properly set them up, have time to soundcheck, and have someone on hand who could step in to fix it if there were any issues. You’d also need someone to serve as an emcee.

While you may think that a friend or family member could handle this job, unless they are very used to speaking publicly, it’s better to leave this to the professionals. And finally, I don’t recommend using a playlist on your wedding day because you need someone there who can think on their feet. Any wedding vendor will tell you that weddings rarely go 100% according to plan. So when cocktail hour runs a little long, or your parent dances get moved up in the day, you will need someone there who can adjust the music accordingly. Just like any other wedding vendor, band members and DJs are trained professionals who will make your wedding day run smoother without you even knowing.
