Arizona: Red Rock Paradise
I’m going to state right off the jump that as of April 2026, this post is all about the Phoenix metro area, but hoping to visit other areas (hello, Sedona) sooner rather than later.
The first time I made it out to Phoenix I was around 9 years old, loving the pool and scared of seeing scorpions. My next visit was over 20 years later and not much had changed on my end, still a big lover of pools and fear of scorpions (thank goodness for not seeing a single one of the latter). In two years I was able to visit the area a few times and I think it might be one of my favorite landlocked places so let’s get into it:
Where we stayed:
In each of my (adult) trips to Arizona I’ve stayed in a different place, which makes my adventurer soul extremely happy, and I’ve loved every spot:
Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort: If you’re going for main character, luxury wellness retreat, soft life energy: this is your spot (and my personal fav). Tucked right into the side of Camelback Mountain, this place is all about privacy, views, and next-level relaxation. Think secluded casitas, floor-to-ceiling desert views, and a spa that feels like a full reset. I particularly liked the fitness classes and gorgeous pool.
FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel: If your aesthetic leans a little more creative, edgy, and design-forward, you’ll love this hotel like I did. This isn’t your typical hotel—it’s basically an art gallery you can sleep in. Rotating exhibits, bold interiors, and a super social atmosphere make it feel young and fresh. Plus, it’s right in downtown Phoenix, so you’re close to galleries, coffee shops, and nightlife.
Canopy by Hilton Scottsdale Old Town: If you’re like me, you want to stay in a place where everything is right at your fingertips. I think Scottsdale might be my favorite city of the Phoenix metro area and this hotel is the perfect fit. The aesthetic is warm and modern, but also gives a design nod to the southwest Native American land it’s on. The rooftop is amazing and, as The Points Guy says “a rooftop pool and lounge that feels very ‘drink at sunset’ coded”.
Element Scottsdale at SkySong: It’s a little more low-key than the others mentioned, but still a very comfortable stay. Located in the SkySong innovation district (very cool, very up-and-coming), this spot is all about modern, clean living. Think airy rooms, wellness-focused amenities, and a more relaxed, extended-stay feel.
Where to visit
Desert Botanical Garden: If you think “desert” means boring… think again. This place is home to 50,000+ plants (!!!), all perfectly adapted to desert life, and somehow it’s one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever walked through. There are multiple walking trails, each with a different vibe, cactus gardens, wildflowers, desert ecosystems; and everything feels super intentional and peaceful. Even though it was 102 degrees (in OCTOBER!), it was still great to walk around outside. Just be sure to lather on that SPF and keep refilling that water bottle! Then duck inside the restaurant/cafe for an AC break.
Stacy's at Melrose: I had the pleasure of visiting since as my friend was performing in a drag show! (Follow him @shaythey on Insta if you’re interested). Located in the Melrose District, this spot is a whole experience and certainly rivals the many gay bars in NYC.
Japanese Friendship Garden: This 3.5-acre garden is a full-on oasis in the middle of the city, complete with koi ponds, waterfalls, stone bridges, and a traditional tea house. It’s quiet, calming, and feels worlds away from the desert heat. Honestly, it’s the kind of place you go when you need a reset moment. Pro tip: they don’t allow outside drinks so don’t try to walk in with your iced coffee like I did!
The Phoenix Art Museum: This is actually the largest art museum in the Southwest, with everything from contemporary art to fashion design exhibits. Take a wild guess which exhibit I went for. This museum is the perfect balance to all the outdoor exploring, fill your inspiration cup, and a chance to slow down and take it all in. Also, there’s no beating a museum’s air conditioning.
Where to eat
Fate Brewing Company: If you’re in the mood for something easy but still good, this is your spot. With a few locations around the general Phoenix area, this brewery is all about small-batch craft beer, elevated pub food, and a super relaxed but polished atmosphere. The space itself is modern with a wraparound patio (prime for golden hour) and cooling misters, and the rotating beer list means there’s always something new to try. Plus, it’s Scottsdale location is directly across the street from the Element hotel so it’s a prime commute for those staying there.
Fellow Osteria & Pizzeria: This place feels like the kind of restaurant you accidentally end up staying at for hours. A modern Italian spot with a mix of pizza, pasta, cocktails, and wine, it’s stylish without trying too hard. Think cozy lighting, a lively atmosphere, and food that hits every time. Perfect for a solo date.
Akita Sushi: Sometimes you’re just craving sushi and this is one of those solid, go-to spots with a large menu. Casual, easy, and perfect for lunch or dinner, it’s the kind of place where you can sit down, order your favorites, and just relax.
Valley Coffee Company: This is the kind of coffee shop I wish I had at close to me back home. They serve Arizona-grown coffee (we love a local source), cold brews, and light bites, all in a space that feels creative and community-driven. It’s perfect whether you’re grabbing something quick or settling in for a slow morning.
El Chorro: I cannot possibly emphasis enough how gorgeous this place is! Originally opened in the 1930s, El Chorro has hosted everyone from Hollywood icons to locals looking for a timeless dining experience (plus private events and weddings). Set at the base of Camelback Mountain, it’s known for beautiful desert views, classic Southwestern-inspired cuisine, and a more elevated atmosphere.
I also want to note that each of the hotels I stayed at had excellent restaurants which I frequented as well! Breakfast at Element was my favorite (many fresh options and omelette bar), for lunch I loved poolside at Canopy, and dinner was amazing at both FOUND:RE and Sanctuary. Special mention to the cocktails at Sanctuary too.
It’s safe to say that even though I don’t like to stray too far from water (coastal people get it), Arizona is a desert gem that has my heart. From it’s rich southwest culture to it’s growing art and wellness scenes, there’s always something new to discover in each visit. Til next time!
