7 Things to Consider When Planning a Beach Wedding

If you know me, you know I love to travel. And there’s nothing more exciting than traveling to a wedding—especially if it’s a beach wedding! Beach weddings embrace the relaxed atmosphere of a sunny vacation and combine it with a fun, party-all-night-long energy. To me, that’s the perfect combination.

As a live illustrator, I’ve attended a fair share of beach weddings. I’ve seen some that planned for every possible scenario and ensured guests felt cared for at every turn. And I’ve seen others that… well, didn’t. This blog is your cheat sheet to planning a beach wedding that feels easy, intentional, and personal.

Many Beaches are Public

The best part about beach weddings is the sheer number of beaches you have to choose from! If you live close to a coast, you can lean into the local elements. If not (or even if you do, but are looking for a different beach), you can host a destination wedding!

No matter where you choose to host your celebration, you must remember that many beaches are public. Even if you have a permit to get married at that beach, you may have to navigate tourists. While this isn’t a deal breaker, and can even be a fun element, it’s something you must be prepared for.

Timelines & Logistics

Beach weddings require careful planning. When deciding on your timeline, you must consider the tide and the position of the sun. When planning for logistics, you need to know how you’re getting to and from the beach, whether there is local public parking, or if you are ferrying guests from the hotel to the beach.

Rain Plan

If you are getting married in a tropical climate, a rain plan is absolutely necessary. Storms may move quickly, but they can be very sudden and are almost always heavy. If a storm is on the horizon, you need to have a contingency plan!

Choosing Your Wedding Look

Beach weddings carry a certain energy. They can often be more low-key so lean into that with lighter fabrics. When you choose your wedding outfit, you should consider the type of energy of a beach wedding. For example, a satin ballgown or velvet suit, while gorgeous, may feel out of place on a sandy boardwalk in 85 degree weather. Perhaps you can find something breathable and airy, like a chiffon, organza, or lightweight lace dress or linen suit.

Make a Clear Dress Code

Just like you need to choose an appropriate gown, your guests need to know how to dress as well! Your wedding invitations should make it very clear that this is a beach wedding, so your guests can wear the best shoes and clothes for the occasion. You and your guests must be dressed for sand, wind, heat, and sunshine.

Provide Fans and/or Parasols

One of the best things about beach weddings is your ability to lean into a theme! Chances are, your wedding will be outside, uncovered, on a sunny day. Even with a perfect forecast, sitting beneath the hot sun can be uncomfortable for your guests. By providing fans, parasols, or both, you’re considering your guests’ comfort and creating an iconic atmosphere. Just think of how cute the photos will be with your guests holding parasols!

Lean Into Local

Whether your beach is close to home or far away, create an immersive celebration by embracing local food, florals, and greenery. The most memorable celebrations are the ones that feel grounded in a sense of place, and your beach wedding can do exactly that! Work with local vendors to find ways to make the experience feel distinct.

Live Illustrations for Beach Weddings

Beach weddings can often be difficult for vendors to navigate, but they are one of my all time favorites. I am my absolute happiest when I have sand under my feet and can smell the ocean breeze! If you are looking for an experience that your guests have never seen before, consider adding live illustrations to your cocktail hour or reception! Guests love having a personal memento, and it will give them a concrete way to remember your celebration.
